Spanish cuisine

Spanish cuisine is a vivid reflection of the rich culture and history of Spain. While regional specialties can vary greatly, there are several dishes that are known worldwide.

Paella, originating from Valencia, is probably the most famous Spanish dish. It is a rice dish with a rich array of ingredients – from seafood to rabbit. A well-known Spanish cold soup is gazpacho, which is made from tomatoes and bell peppers.

Tapas, another iconic element of Spanish cuisine, are small portions of food served as an appetizer or snack. The variety of tapas is incredible, ranging from olives and sliced cheeses to dishes like “patatas bravas” (baked potatoes) or “gambas al ajillo” (shrimp in garlic oil). In the Basque Country, pintxos are popular, similar to tapas but usually much more sophisticated.

Spanish cuisine also includes a variety of cured hams and salamis. Jamón ibérico is the highest grade of Spanish cured ham. Spanish cheeses, such as manchego, a hard cheese made from sheep’s milk, also have an unforgettable taste. In addition to these traditional dishes, Spanish cuisine is known for its sweets, such as churros.
