In Albania, petulla is most commonly served for breakfast. They are eaten fresh, right after frying, when they taste best. A typical side is Balkan white cheese or fruit jam. Serving them with yogurt, honey, or chocolate spreads is also common. Petulla can be enjoyed either savory or sweet, which makes them a very versatile pastry.

I was served these unfilled doughnuts for breakfast in almost every accommodation, most often with cheese and jam. My favorites were those made by a grandmother who had prepared the dough in advance, probably overnight, and who let me watch as she made them. These were the fluffiest and, for me, the very best ❤️

Bon appétit!
