What to Eat in Bergamo
- Polenta Taragna. This is a typical variant of polenta from the Bergamo area, enriched with cheese and butter. This version of polenta is associated with the mountainous regions around Bergamo.
- Casoncelli. Traditional stuffed pasta with a meat or vegetable filling, served with melted butter and cheese. Casoncelli are considered one of the most characteristic dishes of the Bergamo area.
- Stracciatella di Bergamo. A delicious ice cream with chocolate pieces that originated in Bergamo. It was created in the local gelateria La Marianna in the 1960s.
- Formai de Mut. A cow’s milk cheese that matures in cellars in the mountain valleys around Bergamo. It is one of the most famous cheeses from this region.
- Scarpinocc de Parre. Traditional stuffed pasta shaped like “little wooden clogs,” filled with cheese and sage. It comes from the village of Parre in the province of Bergamo.
- Torta Donizetti. A sweet cake named after the famous Bergamo composer Gaetano Donizetti. The cake contains candied fruit, pine nuts, and liqueur.
- Moscato di Scanzo. A sweet dessert wine from a small area east of Bergamo. It is the only DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) wine in the province of Bergamo.
- Polenta e Osei. A confection made of sponge cake and decorated with marzipan. The name refers to the traditional Bergamo dish – polenta.
- Branzi. A semi-hard cheese made from cow’s milk, originating from the Brembana Valley in the province of Bergamo. It is named after the village of Branzi.
- Biscotti di San Pellegrino. Delicate cookies from the area of San Pellegrino Terme, a spa town in the province of Bergamo, also known for its mineral water.
