Yassin Kebab (كباب ياسين) is a traditional kebab shop in Kurdish Erbil, arguably the best in town. Yassin has become synonymous with quality kebab in Erbil to such an extent that it is said: “If you haven’t been to Yassin, you haven’t been to Erbil.”

The establishment was founded back in 1975, which, in the context of the region’s turbulent history, signifies a respectable tradition spanning nearly half a century. The original owner, Mr. Yassin, started humbly; he wanted to offer the working people in the bazaar food that would fill them up, taste like home, and wouldn’t cost a fortune. The branch in the bazaar is the most authentic one you can visit. It is located in the labyrinth of alleyways beneath the old Citadel.

They work exclusively with fresh lamb meat here. Spices are used with moderation. The point is not to overpower the taste of the meat, but to enhance it. Excellently prepared bread also plays an important role. The preparation of the kebab at Yassin’s takes place right before the customers’ eyes.

The kebab is served hot, often placed directly on bread or covered with bread so it doesn’t get cold. With the kebab, you also get a heap of parsley, grilled tomatoes, onions, hot peppers, and pickled vegetables. One portion of perfect lamb kebab with ayran costs 5,000 IQD (3 EUR) here.
Yassin Kebab is definitely a place you shouldn’t miss when visiting Erbil.
Bon appétit!
