Dhallë is a traditional Albanian drink made from yogurt mixed with water and salt.
Dhallë belongs to the broader family of fermented dairy beverages that are popular in various parts of the Balkans, the Middle East, and Central Asia. For example, in Turkey and Bulgaria, similar yogurt drinks are called ayran, in Armenia it’s known as tan, and in Iran as doogh.

Some varieties of dhallë include fresh herbs, such as mint or dill. I enjoyed dhallë with cucumber. The most popular version among Albanians is the basic, unflavored type of dhallë.
You can buy an approximately 400 ml bottle of dhallë in an Albanian supermarket for 50 – 100 ALL (0.50 – 1 EUR).

Dhallë is served well chilled in Albania. It is most commonly enjoyed during hot summer days, when it provides a refreshing boost and helps hydrate the body. It is popular at both breakfast and lunch, and is often served alongside hearty dishes.
I most often enjoyed dhallë for breakfast with Albanian pastry byrek.
Bon appétit!
