History of Grodziskie Beer
Grodziskie has a long history that dates back to the Middle Ages. The first mentions of this beer date back to the 14th century. At that time, Grodziskie beer was very popular not only in Poland but also in neighboring countries. Originally, this beer was brewed by monks in monasteries, which was common for many historical beer styles.
In the 19th century, Grodziskie became one of the most popular beers in Poland, and its production reached its peak. Unfortunately, after World War II and during the communist era in Poland, this beer style declined, and production was almost completely halted. Fortunately, in recent years, there has been a revival of interest in traditional beer styles, and Grodziskie has once again begun to be brewed and is gaining popularity. Today, it is brewed by the namesake brewery as well as other small craft breweries.

Characteristics of Grodziskie Beer
Grodziskie is a light beer with a low alcohol content, usually around 3-4%. Its most distinctive feature is its smoky aroma and flavor, which result from the use of smoked wheat malt. The malt for Grodziskie is dried using smoke from oak wood, which gives the beer a highly intense smoky flavor. The smoky taste is truly very pronounced. Personally, I can’t imagine drinking more than one of these beers in an evening, but maybe I’m just influenced by the traditional “Czech” taste of beer. Nonetheless, it was a very interesting tasting experience.
Another typical characteristic of Grodziskie is its high CO₂ carbonation, making the beer very sparkling and refreshing. This is why it is sometimes compared to champagne and is often served in tall, narrow glasses. Grodziskie also has a mild bitterness, which comes from traditional Polish hops.
Present and Future of Grodziskie Beer
Today, Grodziskie is once again enjoying growing interest among beer enthusiasts and craft breweries. In Poland, more and more breweries are trying to revive and preserve this traditional beer style. Thanks to its truly unique taste and historical significance, Grodziskie beer is ideal for beer lovers who are looking for something unconventional and authentic.
Grodziskie is also a great example of how a traditional beer style can survive and regain popularity thanks to the efforts of brewers and public interest. In many ways, this story is similar to that of Basque wine Txakoli.
Where to Buy Grodziskie Beer
The beer is very easily available in Poland. I bought it at the Polish chain store Carrefour, but you will surely find it elsewhere as well. One bottle cost just under 6 PLN (1.50 EUR).
If you have the opportunity to taste this historical Polish beer, don’t hesitate. It’s an experience that will take you back to medieval Poland and allow you to discover the charm of historical brewing.
Cheers!
