Baltic Porter is a strong dark beer with a high alcohol content, traditionally brewed in the Baltic countries. It is characterized by a rich flavor with notes of bitter chocolate, coffee, and dried fruit.

Poland as a World Powerhouse in Baltic Porter Production
Poland is today effectively a global powerhouse in its production. Polish breweries are among the most prominent producers of this style, and their porter bałtycki regularly wins top awards at international beer competitions. The oldest available Polish porter is Żywiec Porter, which has been brewed since 1881. Other well-known examples include Okocim Porter, Komes Porter Bałtycki, and Imperator Bałtycki.

History of Baltic Porter
The origins of this beer style trace back to the Baltic Sea region and Russia, where it developed as a local substitute for imperial stout, the strongest version of English porter at the time, which was imported in the 18th century from Great Britain. Due to the continental blockade imposed by Napoleon, which restricted the import of strong beers from Great Britain, local brewers began to produce their own version of porter adapted to local conditions and tastes.
Characteristics of Baltic Porter
Baltic porter is characterized by a dark color, ranging from dark red-copper to opaque dark brown. The beer has a thick, long-lasting foam of creamy or yellow-brown color. The aroma and taste are rich and complex, with pronounced notes of roasted malt, caramel, nuts, molasses, or licorice. Over time, the beer develops oxidative notes of dried fruit, raisins, figs, cherries, port wine, or sherry. Bitterness is medium to low to balance the malt profile of the beer. The alcohol content is very high, most often ranging between 8-10%.

Baltic porter is extremely popular in Poland and is an integral part of Polish beer culture. It is often seen as the Polish national beer style.
I had the opportunity to taste the Baltic Porter Komes from the Polish Fortuna Brewery and the Baltic Porter from the Szreniawa Brewery, which is located near Poznań.
Baltic Porter Komes from Fortuna Brewery
The Fortuna Brewery was founded in 2011, and their Komes Porter is brewed in the traditional Baltic style, maturing for several months before bottling. It is characterized by a full flavor with notes of dried fruit reminiscent of port wine. It is among the best Baltic porters in the world and is one of the most awarded Polish beers. It has been awarded a gold medal at the European Beer Star competition and a silver medal at the World Beer Cup.
Baltic Porter from Szreniawa Brewery
Szreniawa Brewery is a small brewery that you can easily visit as part of a tour of the National Agricultural Museum in the village of Szreniawa. It is located right at the end of the museum’s grounds. I tasted several of their other beers directly at the brewery, and if you love airplanes, then you probably won’t find a better beer garden anywhere else in the world than here. You can practically touch the historic machines, they are so close.

Both of these Baltic porters were very tasty and interesting, with a complex character and a pronounced body. They pleasantly differed from each other, representing slightly different interpretations of this beer style. Baltic porters from Polish breweries are definitely worth trying; they offer an extraordinary beer experience. You can easily buy these beers in Polish supermarkets; I paid approximately 11 PLN (2.60 EUR) for each bottle.
Cheers!
