Jídlovice Canteen: Tasty Cheap Lunch in Prague

Jídlovice is a popular network of affordable Prague canteens. For me, Jídlovice is currently the best “tray-style” dining in Prague and a great place to go for lunch in Prague.

Jídlovice primarily focus on office workers, with two branches in Dejvice and one in Karlín. All the photos in this article come from the Karlín branch.

Jídlovice Canteen Karlín: chicken drumsticks with five-spice seasoning, sweet potato purée, sautéed pea pods with chili, ginger, and coriander leaves (179 CZK/7.20 EUR) and chicken broth with liver rice, roasted vegetables, and lovage (59 CZK/2.40 EUR).

Jídlovice offers both Czech classics and dishes from various world cuisines every day. I get the impression that the operators of Jídlovice have genuinely thought about what Czechs enjoy. Among the popular staples, they have included beef sirloin with dumplings, Hungarian goulash, breaded chicken schnitzel, or Dutch schnitzel with mashed potatoes and pickles. These four dishes are complemented daily by a rotating menu of dishes from different parts of the world. The menu might feature Italian lasagna or arancini, and even Swedish meatballs (and no, these are not from IKEA).

The price of meals at Jídlovice is around 180 CZK (7.20 EUR), and soup costs 59 CZK (2.40 EUR). Portions are reasonably large, the dishes are well-seasoned, and beautifully presented. And the plates? Surprisingly luxurious for a canteen. The spaces are modern, and the staff operates like a highly efficient machine.

Jídlovice is extremely popular, so you often encounter a queue outside the door, especially during peak lunch hours. But the staff inside works at an incredible speed (really!), and the line moves quickly.

The popularity of Jídlovice also comes with some downsides; it’s genuinely noisy inside (due to guests), almost every table and chair is occupied, and you might sometimes feel a bit pressured to vacate your spot immediately after finishing your meal. But in my opinion, the positives outweigh the negatives.

Jídlovice Canteen Karlín: A queue during peak lunch hours is not unusual. Fortunately, it moves quickly.

Have you been to any of the Jídlovice locations? What do you think of this modern network of Prague cafeterias?

Bon appétit!
