Mevlana pidesi is a typical Turkish regional specialty originating from the city of Konya. The dish belongs to the category of Turkish pide – flatbread similar to pizza with various fillings. It is named after the famous Persian poet and philosopher Jalaluddin Rumi, known as Mevlana, whose tomb is located in Konya.

Mevlana pidesi is made from thin leavened dough, which is filled with a specific combination of minced meat, cheese, tomatoes, peppers, and spices. It is traditionally baked in a stone oven like other types of pide, resulting in its characteristic crispy surface. In the context of Turkish cuisine, Mevlana pidesi represents one of the many regional variations of pide.

Konya, the birthplace of Mevlana pidesi, is an important cultural and spiritual center of Turkey. In some cases, out of respect for the significant poet Mevlana, restaurants have chosen to offer this dish under the name “karışık” (mixed) or “Konya pidesi.” However, it is the same type of pide.
I had the chance to taste an absolutely delicious Mevlana pide at the renowned establishment Yağ Somunu Pideci Hasan Şendağlı (see Where to Eat in Konya). One pide cost 150 TRY (3.60 EUR). The dough was perfectly crispy, the filling was wonderfully seasoned, and the grilled green peppers were extremely spicy (😁).
Bon appétit!
