Szare Kluchy: Polish Potato Dumplings

Szare kluchy are Polish dumplings made from grated raw potatoes, flour, and eggs. The name “szare” translates to “gray,” referring to their color, which they acquire due to the use of raw grated potatoes. This is a Polish dish typical of the Greater Poland region.

The preparation of szare kluchy is not particularly complicated. Peeled raw potatoes are finely grated, mixed with flour, egg, and salt until a stiff dough forms. Small dumplings are then shaped from the dough and boiled in salted water. The cooked dumplings are drained and traditionally served with hot pork belly cracklings and sauerkraut.

I tried szare kluchy at the Poznań restaurant Pyra Bar (see Where to Eat in Poznań), which specializes in traditional Polish potato dishes. One portion here cost 31 PLN (7.40 EUR).

A plate arrived with a heap of potato dumplings generously topped with pieces of cracklings and sauerkraut. A great meal made from just three basic ingredients.

The taste of the dish vaguely reminded me of Slovak halušky without bryndza; after all, both types of dumplings use potatoes. In Slovak halušky, they are boiled, while in this Polish dish, the potatoes are grated raw.

Szare kluchy, like pyry z gzikiem, are a great example of how even the simplest ingredients can create a tasty and filling meal.

Bon appétit!
