Hua Long Zhai Chinese Restaurant: The Best Chinese Dumplings in Prague

Chinese stuffed dumplings. These are the main stars of the Chinese restaurant Hua Long Zhai, located in Prague’s Vršovice district. Just like in another Chinese restaurant Chi Xiao Mian, you won’t find “five-spice chicken” or “fragrant and tender duck” here. The specialty of this Chinese restaurant is dumplings filled with pork, beef, chicken, or tofu. Their flavor is perfected here.

The renowned dumplings are, of course, made in-house. The seasoning of the filling is delicate, the portions are large, and the price is not excessive. For example, you can get 12 large pork and onion dumplings for 178 CZK (7 EUR). Along with this, you get unlimited servings of freshly brewed green tea for free.

The demand for these dumplings is so high that the restaurant also offers frozen dumplings for sale, and people often take advantage of this option (another place to buy frozen stuffed Chinese dumplings is the department store Tamda at the market Sapa Prague, although those are definitely not handmade small-batch dumplings). The price for frozen dumplings is lower, and preparing them at home is not difficult (you just need a pot with a “steamer”).

The space in the Chinese restaurant is not large, the furniture is traditional and not very modern, so it might not be the ideal place for a first date (unless you’re sinologists). However, the older interior is balanced by the incredibly charismatic lady owner, who is also the chef. She greets people, seats them, and helps with meal selection. Although she doesn’t speak fluent Czech, her willingness, honesty in her answers, and the optimism she radiates are incredible.

Incidentally, the walls of the establishment are adorned with press clippings and photos from her sporting past in the field of kung fu (wu-shu).

Menu of Chinese Restaurant Hua Long Zhai

The menu at the Chinese restaurant includes only 5 types of dumplings and another 12 dishes on the permanent menu. During lunch, there is also a buffet with all-you-can-eat  (salad, rice, and three types of meat or tofu) for just under 200 CZK (8 EUR).

Since the restaurant doesn’t have a website, I’m exceptionally including photos of the pleasantly short but very tempting menu.

I have a particular fondness for restaurants that specialize in one dish. So if you’re looking for a place in Prague to try authentic Chinese stuffed dumplings, Hua Long Zhai is the place to be.

Bon appétit!
