Kavala kurabiyesi are traditional Turkish almond cookies originating from the city of Kavala, which is now located in northern Greece. In the past, this region was part of the Ottoman Empire.

Kavala kurabiyesi are made from flour, butter, almonds, powdered sugar, and vanilla sugar. The dough is most often cut into crescent shapes, which are baked in the oven. After baking, the warm cookies are coated in powdered sugar. Kavala kurabiyesi are traditionally baked both at home and in pastry shops and bakeries. Their preparation is not overly complicated, making them suitable for home baking. Kavala kurabiyesi are a great complement to coffee or tea.
Kavala kurabiyesi, with their shape, taste, and tenderness, remind me of Czech vanilla crescent cookies, which are traditionally prepared in Czechia during Christmas. Both types of cookies share some basic ingredients, a tender structure, and a distinctive layer of powdered sugar on the surface. In my opinion, the use of a different type of nut does not significantly affect the taste.

Kavala kurabiyesi are among my favorite Turkish sweets, they remind me of home. They are also sold in stores and are my favorite Turkish gourmet souvenir. Have you had the chance to try them?
Bon appétit!
