Poznańskie Muzeum Pyry: Poznań Potato Museum

Poznańskie Muzeum Pyry is a place dedicated entirely to a single food: potatoes. Potatoes are one of the most important and widespread crops in the world. Especially for younger visitors (but also for adults), it offers a unique perspective on this humble yet significant crop.

The name “pyra” is a local term for potato used in the Greater Poland region, where Poznań is located. Potatoes play a significant role in Polish cuisine (definitely try pyry z gzikiem, szare kluchy, or potato babka) and are a part of many traditional Polish dishes. The Pyra Museum aims to showcase the importance of potatoes in Polish culture and gastronomy, both historically and today.

The museum’s exhibition is divided into several thematic sections, guided by a humorous guide during a narrated tour. Visitors can learn about the origins of potatoes in South America, their journey to Europe, and their gradual spread worldwide. The museum also highlights the importance of potatoes in Polish agriculture and their role in the national economy. The exhibition even includes a Czech reference in the form of a poster warning about the Colorado potato beetle.

The tour lasts just under an hour and is conducted only in Polish. It is recommended to book your spot online in advance; the entrance fee is 28 PLN (6.80 EUR). A nice touch is that at the very beginning of the tour, you get to season a raw potato yourself, which the guide then places in the oven, and it’s ready to eat at the end of the tour.

If you understand Polish, it’s definitely an interesting place to visit.

Enjoy your tour!
