Twelve grapes for the New Year

Whenever I discover a new custom or tradition while traveling, I am very happy. One such custom in Spain is the eating of twelve grapes during the last twelve seconds of the year. With each chime of the bell, one grape is eaten. According to this tradition, each grape represents a wish for one of the months in the coming year, and at the same time, it is a farewell to the current year. Grapes are a fruit associated with abundance and happiness. In Spanish stores before New Year’s Eve, you can also find special grape packages containing exactly twelve grapes.
