Mine Frit: Fried Noodles

Mine frit is one of the most popular dishes in Mauritius. It is a type of fried egg noodles that are usually prepared with various vegetables, such as carrots, onions, or pak choi. Cooked noodles and raw vegetables are fried together with various spices and sauces, such as soy sauce, hoisin sauce, or oyster sauce. Mine frit can be served alone, but more commonly, it is served with egg or chicken, beef, or shrimp. It is a tasty and filling dish.

The origin of mine frit is likely influenced by Chinese and Indian cuisine because both cultures were significant on the island of Mauritius. Mine frit is served hot and often garnished with fresh herbs, such as green onions or cilantro.

Mine frit was the very first dish I tasted in Mauritius. I chose the version with chicken and egg at the Nam Wah Snack bistro, which I visited many times afterward. The fried noodles cost 170 MUR, which is approximately 3.60 EUR.

You can also taste great mine frit directly on the Flic en Flac beach at the Ti Kabann bistro.

Bon appetit!
