Tunisia has a long winemaking tradition dating back to ancient Roman times. French colonization in the 19th century brought modern winemaking technologies to the country and boosted wine exports to Europe. Today, Tunisia produces intriguing red and white wines from both local and international grape varieties, despite the restrictions imposed by Islam.
Wine
Wine is an alcoholic beverage produced by fermenting grapes. There are many varieties of wine, but the basic division is into red, white and sparkling wine. The taste, colour and aroma of wine are different for each variety or winemaker. Whenever I have the opportunity to travel, I try to visit vineyards. The most beautiful ones I have discovered so far are in Saint-Émilion in France. The best wine in the world is produced by winemakers from France and Italy, but the Czech Republic can also offer top wines. I also love to taste the local dessert wines.
Na břehu Rhôny: A Chain of Self-Service BIB Wine Bars
Na břehu Rhôny is a chain of wine bars that focuses on wines from the Rhône Valley in France. A major difference from other wine bars is the self-service option, where guests can choose from approximately twenty different wines from bag-in-boxes, pour their own drinks, and record their consumption. Bottled wines and French delicacies are also available.
Cava: Spanish Champagne
Cava is a Spanish sparkling wine produced using the traditional bottle fermentation method, similar to French Champagne. It is primarily made in Catalonia from local grape varieties. The production process involves secondary fermentation in the bottle and aging in underground cellars for at least 9 months. Cava was officially recognized in 1972 and is now the second best-selling sparkling wine in the world after Champagne.
Wines of Alicante
Alicante is a paradise for wine lovers, where the unique character and flavor of the wines arise from the ideal combination of Mediterranean and continental climates, along with diverse soil conditions. The region is particularly renowned for the Monastrell, Moscatel, and Giró grape varieties, which produce wines rich in intense aromas and flavors of dark fruit, spices, or floral notes. The quality and origin of these wines are guaranteed by two official designations - the prestigious Denominación de Origen Alicante and Vinos de la Tierra de Alicante.
Txakoli: Traditional Basque Wine
Txakoli is a traditional, lightly sparkling, and refreshing white wine from the Basque Country, made from local grape varieties. It is characterized by high acidity, low alcohol content, and fresh notes of citrus and green apples. Traditionally served chilled, it is poured in a distinctive manner from a height into wide glasses. Txakoli pairs excellently with local Basque specialties.
